The week of the Merrie Monarch Festival is filled with craft fairs, free music and hula performances, art exhibits, cultural demonstrations, a parade, a hō‘ike (show) and more. Originally started in 1963, The Merrie Monarch Festival is a week-long cultural event created in honor of King David Kalakaua, otherwise known as the “Merrie Monarch,” revered for his role in reviving hula and other Hawaiian arts. Hotels are at capacity and restaurants are overflowing as thousands come from around the world to celebrate the Hawaiian culture and the art of hula (Hawaiian dance) at the Merrie Monarch Festival. Once a year, the normally quiet town of Hilo becomes a hub of activity. The event culminates with a Grand Parade that starts from Saratoga Road and continues through Kalakaua Avenue. You will gain a rich cultural experience with crafts, dance performances and art demonstrations. Tickets, which usually go on sale in December, sell out quickly. Kawelu wants to start selling tickets but it’s not clear how many spectators will be allowed inside the stadium. Hawaii County Mayor Mitch Roth is optimistic the festival can be held before a live audience because of a steady decline in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations over the past few weeks, spokesperson Cyrus Johnasen said. Other events surrounding Merrie Monarch week, including a parade, were canceled and remain uncertain for 2022. Those with stadium access remained in a bubble for the week and underwent COVID-19 testing and temperature checks. This year’s festival was held in June in an almost empty stadium using music that was prerecorded in a Honolulu studio. The event is often referred to as the Olympics of hula.įestival President Luana Kawelu said next year’s event is planned for April and will return to its usual schedule, but “this is all up in the air yet,” Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported today. In normal times, thousands of people from around the world descend on Hilo on the Big Island for the Merrie Monarch Festival.
